Berry announces local SAFE grants
Danvers Herald - February 27, 2003

Sen. Frederick E. Berry announced that local fire departments will receive grants for the Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) Program. The grants were administered by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services.

"The SAFE Program teaches children how to react to fire and smoke in potentially life-threatening situations," said Berry. "There have been countless success stories of children saving themselves or loved ones by using fire-safety behaviors they learned from the SAFE Program."

The following SAFE Program grants were awarded in Berry's district: Danvers Fire Department, $1,400; Beverly Fire Department, $1,390; Salem Fire Department, $1,885; Peabody Fire Department, $1,885.

The SAFE Program is a state initiative to provide resources to local fire departments to conduct fire-safety education programs in grades K-12. The mission is to enable students to recognize the dangers of fire and the fire hazards tobacco products pose.
