Local councils on aging will receive state grants totaling $151, 555 for the Second Essex District, Senator Frederick E. Berry (D-Peabody) announced.
The grants, which are distributed by the Executive Office of Elderly Affairs, will fund new and existing programs and services that the councils provide for elderly residents.
"It is always gratifying when state money is being used to directly benefit the citizens I represent," Berry said. "The local councils on aging provide a necessary service to their elderly residents. It is important that senior citizens have access to a healthy and stimulating environment in their communities."
The grant awards are based on communities' 60 and over population. Under those guidelines, Peabody will receive a $46,595 grant that will be used to employ a volunteer and educational coordinator and supplement local funding for the social service / outreach workers.
Beverly will receive $24,475, Danvers $37,160, and Salem $37,185 under the same guidelines.
Peabody, Beverly and Salem Councils on Aging will also receive Service Incentive Awards. These highly competitive grants are awarded to enhance or expand COA service capabilities.
Peabody will receive $1,640 to fund the installation of automatic door openers, while Beverly will receive $2,800 to fund the position of Program Coordinator, and Salem will receive a $1,000 grant to be used to conduct a Caring for Elders at Home program and a $700 grand to be used to fund the expansion of the TRIAD program.
