DANVERS — Politicians, educators and hundreds of others are expected to pay tribute to Senate Majority Leader Fred Berry, D-Peabody, tomorrow morning as North Shore Community College dedicates the building that will share his name.
About 300 guests are expected for the 11 a.m. naming ceremony, according to Cathy Anderson, the director of alumni and college relations. Among them, U.S. Rep. John Tierney, Senate President Robert Travaglini and Board of Higher Education Chancellor Judith Gill are expected to address guests. Speaker of the House Salvatore DiMasi is tentatively scheduled to talk.
The new three-story, $24 million Ferncroft Road building will be called the Frederick E. Berry Building and will serve as the main classroom structure for the 3,500 students on North Shore's Danvers campus.
"It's a kickoff celebration in recognition of Sen. Berry and his community service and commitment to higher education in Massachusetts," Anderson said. "We're extremely grateful for his support. We're honored to have this program for him."
After the dedication ceremony and an hourlong luncheon, about a half-dozen state representatives will visit classrooms to host 30-minute guest lectures for students.
The event is the beginning of the college's 40th anniversary celebration, which will also include open houses and reunions throughout the year.
