Democratic State Senators Fred Berry of Peabody and Tom McGee of Lynn were returned to office yesterday as they both ran unopposed.

Berry, the Senate majority leader, won his 11th term in the Second Essex district, which includes Peabody, Salem, Beverly, Danvers and Topsfield. He has not faced a Republican opponent since 1996.

Berry spent last night in Boston in the office of Senate President Robert Travaglini monitoring the senate races around the state. Afterwards, he traveled to Copley Square for the official John Kerry gathering.

When asked about his goals for the next term, he said, "I'd like to send Mitt Romney back to Utah."

McGee will start his second full term representing Lynn, Marblehead, Nahant, Swampscott, and parts of Saugus and Melrose. He joined the state senate in May 2002 to fill the vacancy when Edward "Chip" Clancy became mayor of Lynn.

Yesterday an office aide said McGee was in Broward County, Fla., campaigning for Kerry.

In another uncontested race, Mary Ellen Manning of Peabody won her third term on the Governor's Council, which approves the state's judges.

Manning said her goal for the next term is "to continue to get the best judges to deliver justice to the people of the Commonwealth."
