PEABODY — Longtime state Sen. Fred Berry, D-Peabody, has made improving the quality of life for those with disabilities a priority. Now that dedication has been recognized by the Disability Law Center of Massachusetts.

The center, which celebrated its 25-year anniversary with a benefit Sept. 9, honored Berry with the Legislative Leadership Award. Berry was a lead sponsor of legislation that created the Disabled Persons Protection Commission, and has worked to ensure affordable housing in Massachusetts for those with disabilities.

Berry, who lives in Peabody and is currently serving his 11th term in the state Senate, was born with cerebral palsy.

"I am proud of the work I have done," said Berry. "The work being done by the Disability Law Center is a sign that the concerns of the disability community are being highlighted throughout the commonwealth. I am proud to have been recognized."

The executive director of the Disability Law Center, Christine Griffin, who presented the award and has worked with Sen. Berry for many years on disability issues, spoke of his passion.

"He is a fighter, and we are fortunate to have him in our corner," said Griffin.
