Senator Berry Announces Historic Preservation Grants for Salem
Press Release - October 13, 2000

Senator Frederick E. Berry (D-Peabody) announced today that Salem will receive state grants from the Massachusetts Preservation Projects Fund, which are distributed by the Massachusetts Historical Commission. The fund was established in 1984 to support the preservation of properties, landscapes and sites listed or, in certain circumstances, eligible for listing in the State Register of Historic Places. Three Massachusetts Preservation Project Grants were awarded to Salem, totaling the amount of $135,000.

Massachusetts Project Preservation Grants will be awarded to:
  • Salem Jail for the amount of $76,000
  • Salem City Hall for the amount of $35,000
  • Nathaniel Bowditch House for the amount of $24,000

"It is very important to preserve the heritage of our past by maintaining these historic structures," said Senator Berry. "These sites played an important part in Salem's unique history and helped shaped Salem into the great city it is today."
