Senator Berry Announces Grants for Fire Safety Education
Press Release - October 18, 2001

Senator Frederick E. Berry (D-Peabody) announced today that local fire departments will receive grants for the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E) Program. The grants were administered by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services.

"It is extremely important that children learn at a young age about fire prevention and the dangers of fire," said Senator Berry. "More importantly, the S.A.F.E Program teaches children how to react to fire and smoke in potentially life threatening situations. There have been countless success stories of children saving themselves or loved ones by using fire safety behaviors they learned from the S.A.F.E. Program."

The following S.A.F.E. Program grants were awarded in Senator Berry's district:

  • Beverly Fire Department will receive $3,669.68.
  • Danvers Fire Department will receive $4390.76.
  • Salem Fire Department will receive $5,107.71.
  • Peabody Fire Department will receive $3669.68.

The S.A.F.E. Program is a state initiative to provide resources to local fire departments to conduct fire safety education programs in grades K-12. The mission is to enable students to recognize the dangers of fire and the fire hazards tobacco products pose.
